Description

Cathedral Spires – Needles Highway.

The Cathedral Spires Trail offers an up-close encounter with the towering granite formations tucked just behind Needles Highway. Beginning and ending near Sylvan Lake, this scenic loop winds through some of the most striking landscapes in the Black Hills – and it’s truly a must-do hike.

Weaving through narrow passages and open forest, the trail immerses you in the formations rather than simply viewing them from a distance. The jagged granite towers rise dramatically around you, creating an almost surreal experience – like walking through nature’s own skyline.

Starting near Sylvan Lake adds even more beauty, with peaceful lakeside views giving way to a gradual climb into the heart of the spires.

What Makes Cathedral Spires Special

Up-close formations – You’re among the spires, not just admiring them from afar
Changing terrain – A beautiful mix of forest, open granite and natural corridors
Iconic Black Hills views – The most photogenic scenery in western South Dakota

If you’re creating a list of “don’t miss” hikes in South Dakota, the Cathedral Spires Trail absolutely belongs near the top, as it is for us – both for its beauty and the unforgettable feeling of walking among these towering stone giants.
