Vancouver Island – Wolf Warning.

From the eastern shores of Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island to the rugged western expanse of Vancouver Island, combined with an incredible interior, Canada offers some of the most awe-inspiring adventures. Spanning over 12,000 square miles, Vancouver Island begins at its southern tip in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Known for its enchanting gardens, scenic inner harbor, and top-notch dining, Victoria is a city steeped in old-world charm – a perfect introduction to the island’s character. Separated from the mainland by the Strait of Georgia, Vancouver Island opens the door to breathtaking vistas, pristine wilderness, and world-class fishing.

The interior of the island is a lush rainforest, home to towering old-growth forests filled with western red cedar, Douglas fir, and a vibrant understory covered in ferns and moss.

Quaint coastal towns emerge along the west coast, each rich with charm and character. The wild beauty of Pacific Rim National Park unfolds along the shoreline, where crashing waves, endless beaches, and unforgettable sunsets create a landscape that feels both powerful and peaceful.

Vancouver Island is truly the jewel of Canada’s western coastline, and it’s cold, nutrient-rich waters teem with marine life, making it a premier destination for fishing and wildlife. With the highest concentrations of black bears and cougars on Earth, and home to Roosevelt elk, seals, sea lions, otters, bald eagles, and an array of whale species – including orcas, humpbacks, and Pacific gray whales – the island shares her unmatched wildlife experience at every turn.

As we got ready for our West Coast Trail hike, this wolf warning sign was posted at the trail head.  Having bear spray was reassuring, but still raised our alert.  In all, the hike was stunning and we didn’t find any wolves wanting to share the trail.  Searching further, we were then told that there hadn’t been any human interaction, but that three dogs – on leashes were taken from the trail in recent weeks.  WOW – We don’t have a dog, but it’s hard to imagine being out on a hike, encountering a wolf, and watching it run off with a cherished pet. Hearing that this has happened three times in recent weeks really underscores how wild Vancouver Island can be. We were also told that two female wolves were responsible, likely asserting their dominance over the territory.

This was a journey we’ll never forget. Exploring the island’s lush, ancient forests, rugged coastlines, and diverse wildlife was nothing short of an adventure through one of Canada’s most pristine and untamed regions.

We’re thrilled to share more of these adventures – experiences that have inspired us, strengthened our faith, and shown us the awe-inspiring beauty of the world around us.

Our hope is that these journeys will inspire and uplift you, and maybe even spark a few adventures of your own!
